Track & Field Teams Compete At Solomon Husky Invitational

DEDHAM, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's and women's track and field teams both took part in the Soloman Husky Invitational hosted by Northeastern University on Saturday. Senior Rebecca Cole (Barrington, R.I.) lead the way for the women with a runner-up finish in the hammer throw. The Crusader men were lead by the second place finishes of senior Daniel Ryan (East Hempstead N.H.) and sophomore Conor Meikle (Newport, R.I.).
Cole took second overall in the hammer throw with a toss of 146'8" to finish behind Jane Jennings by just under ten feet.
Two relay teams also performed well on the day for Holy Cross on the women's side. The 4x400-meter relay team took third overall with a time of 4:20.78. The team is made up by sophomore Christine Carifio (Haverhill, Mass.), freshman Sophia Grammenos (Gardner, Mass.), junior Megan Williams (Westfield, Mass.) and freshman Katie Clay (Beverly, Mass.).
Also, the women's 4x100-meter relay team took fourth in the competition with a time of 51.32 behind the efforts of senior Meghan Carrette (North Reading, Mass.), junior Kaitlyn Mearn (Milton, Mass.), freshman Lesley Bautista (St. Johns, NL) and freshman Danielle Meder (Chicopee, Mass.).
Finishing third overall in the women's javelin throw was junior Eileen Geoghegan (Merrimac, Mass.) with a toss of 116'1". Freshman Katherine Clifford (Norwood, Mass.) took third in the discus throw with a distance of 122'0".
Another solid finish was turned in by freshman Elizabeth Alizzi (Syosset, N.Y.) as she finished fourth in the 5000-meter run in a time of 9:41.07.
The Crusader men were lead by the efforts of Ryan and Meikle. Ryan continued his solid senior season with a second place finish in the high jump with a leap of 6'2". Meikle took second in the men's pole vault with a clearance of 4.26 meters.
Sophomore Kevin Dowd (Broad Brook, Conn.) was the fourth place finisher in the men's triple jump event with a jump of 12.51 meters.
In the men's 800-meter event, senior Thomas Severo (Westford, Mass.) took fourth overall just ahead of his teammate, senior Christopher Morris (Old Brookville, N.Y.). Severo's time was 2:00.75 and Morris finished in 2:01. 20.
Sophomore Michael Ricotta (Cross River, N.Y.) finished sixth in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 22.94.
This week the Holy Cross men will host a decathlon as the women will host a heptathlon. The events will begin on Wednesday, April 19 at 12:00 p.m. and continue through Thursday, April 20.
