WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's track and field team was victorious on Saturday at the Worcester City Meet at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, beating out five other local teams. Junior Kaitlyn Mearn (Milton, Mass.) again lead the way, taking first in the 100-meter dash and second in the 200-meter dash.
Mearn finished the 100-meter dash in a time of 13.76 to pick up the victory. She also was runner-up in the 200-meters with a time of 27.71.
Also helping the Crusader women in a big way was freshman Alexandra Swiatocha (Mahopac, N.Y.) who won the women's 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:07.26 and also took second in the 100-meter hurdles.
Holy Cross had seven different women win individual events on the day.
In the field events senior Courtney Walls (Tewksbury, Mass.) took first in the pole vault with a clearance of 10'3" and sophomore Lynn Barowski (Merrimack, N.H.) won the long jump with a leap of 16'2". Freshman Katherine Clifford (Norwood, Mass.) won the discus throw with a toss of 34.94 meters.
Also winning a track event was freshman Lauren Courtney (Ashland, Mass.), who was victorious in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.00. Junior Meghan Hyland (Rye, N.Y.) also won the 1500-meters in a time of 19:57.92.
The Holy Cross men's team sent a partial team to the Worcester City Meet with the other part of the team at Southern Connecticut State. The Crusaders totaled 115 points on the day as WPI won the overall event with 241 points.
Freshman Sebastion Fidelus (Jersey City, N.J.) lead the way for the men by winning the 400-meter dash in a time of 52.54. Sophomore Conor Meikle (Newport, R.I.) finished second overall in the pole vault with a clearance of 13'5".
Senior captain Daniel Ryan (East Hempstead, N.H.) had two third place finishes on the day in both the high jump (5'10") and the triple jump (40'11").
Sophomore Alex Ignachuck (Maynard, Mass.) had a third place finish in the men's hammer throw with a toss of 41.33 meters.
Next on the schedule for both Crusader teams is the Tufts Hillside Class on Saturday, April 8 in Medford, Mass. The events will begin at 10:00 a.m.
