NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Paige Sutherland (Groveland, Mass.) placed fifth in the women's 5,000-meter run in a time of 17:41.66, as the Holy Cross men's and women's track and field teams opened competition in the New England Championship at Jess Dow Field. Junior Chase Bradford (West Bridgewater, Mass.) also scored points for the Crusaders, finishing eighth in the men's javelin with a throw of 58.02 meters. Holy Cross' women currently stand in 14th place with four points after the first day of competition, when the men are in 20th place with one point.
Two members of the women's team placed in the top eight in the trials of both the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, to advance to Saturday's finals. Freshman Stephanie Okpoebo (Chelmsford, Mass.) had the third-fastest time in the 100-meter dash (12:42) and was eighth in the 200-meter dash (25.66), while senior M. Siobhan Straub (Mattituck, N.Y.) qualified sixth in both the 100-meter dash (12.46) and the 200-meter dash (25.60). Junior Erin Linnehan also advanced to Saturday's finals in the women's 100-meter hurdles, qualifying in seventh place with a time of 14.65.
Other top finishers for the Holy Cross women were freshman Emily Hughes (Milton, Mass.) in the 5,000-meter run (17:58.87 / ninth), senior Cassandra Anderson (Saugus, Mass.) in the 400-meter dash (58.96 / 11th), freshman Christy Manning (Scarborough, Maine) in the javelin (34.90 meters / 13th), sophomore Brittany Gorski (Tewksbury, Mass.) in the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.18 / 15th) and freshman Vicki Tiedemann (Bay Shore, N.Y.) in the 10,000-meter run (40:04.78 / 16th). For the men, senior Chris Bergan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) came in 13th in the 10,000-meter run (32:16.11) and senior Alex Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind.) was 21st in the 400-meter hurdles (56.66).
The Crusaders will conclude competition in the New England Championship on Saturday, May 14.
