Holy Cross Opens Competition At The Patriot League Championship

EASTON, Pa. – The Holy Cross men's and women's track and field team opened up competition at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship in Easton, Pa. with an ECAC qualifying time, second place finish, a school record and two finals qualifications. After one day of action, the men's team is in seventh place with nine points, while Army is leading the action with 45 points. Lehigh is leading the women's competition with 43 points, while the Crusaders are in seventh with 10.

The Holy Cross women's  4x800 relay team of sophomore Kathleen Brekka (Hubbardston, Mass.), senior Courtney Burgess (Dracut, Mass.),senior Cassandra Anderson (Saugus, Mass.) and junior Katelyn Hartnett (Danvers, Mass.) finished first with an ECAC Championship qualifying time of 8:58.41. Junior Chase Bradford (West Bridgewater, Mass.) finished second in the javelin with a distance of 57.83 meters. Freshman Stephanie Okpoebo (Chelmsford, Mass.) qualified for the finals in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes with the fastest times of the day. In the 100, Okpoebo qualified with a time of 12.20 seconds and in the 200 she qualified with a time of 25.07 seconds. Senior M. Siobhan Straub (Mattituck, N.Y.) also qualified for the finals in the 100 and 200. In the 100, Straub hit a qualifying time of 12.38 seconds and in the 200 she qualified for the finals with a time of 25.42 seconds.

Junior Erin Linnehan (Litchfield, N.H.) qualified for the finals in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.57 seconds, just missing the school record time of 14.47 seconds. Senior Alex Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind.) placed sixth in the long jump with a distance of 6.67 meters. The men's 4x800 relay team of junior Stephen Madsen (New Providence, N.J.), sophomore Nick Poles (Quincy, Mass.), freshman Sam McGrath (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and senior Brendan Medeiros (Fall River, Mass.) placed seventh with a time of 7:49.48.   

Holy Cross continues action at the Patriot League Championship on Saturday, May 7 starting with the men's 3,000 steeplechase at 11:00 a.m.
