Hamden, Conn. - The Holy Cross men's tennis team took the courts this weekend at the Quinnipiac Invitational in Hamden, Conn., taking on some tough competition over the three day event. In Flight A doubles matches, senior Brian Kelly (Winchester, Mass) and sophomore Angelo Sica (Chester, N.J.) defeated Priit Gross and Kyle Eddins from Fairleigh Dickinson University in first round play by a score of 9-7. The duo would take on Ira Reibeisen and Ben Young from Boston University in the second round where the pair of Crusaders would be defeated 9-7. No other doubles pair would advance beyond the first round for Holy Cross.
In singles action, Holy Cross would face some more strong competition. Freshman John Burke (Burlington, Mass.) would win an exciting three set match over Sacred Heart's Bryan Rodgers. Burke would take the first set 6-2, drop the second set and rally to win the third 10-7. No other Crusader would advance beyond round one in any flight. However, in the consolation singles matches, Holy Cross would prove to be victorious on multiple occasions. In flight A, Sica HC would defeat Merendino from Sacred Heart 8-3. Kelly would take his match against Gross from Fairleigh Dickinson, 8-5. Senior Tom Moran (Concord, N.H.) would convincingly against Cook from Sacred Heart. Sophomore Jay DeSanto (Dalton, PA) would be victorious over Lanciotti from Sacred Heart 8-3. Sophomore Brendan McElhenny (Huntington, N.Y.) and junior Matthew Vicidomino (Dover, Mass.) would both lose their consolation matches to opponents by the score of 8-3.
The Holy Cross men's tennis team returns to the courts starting on Friday, October 20 at the ITA Regional event in Philadelphia, PA. Matches are scheduled to begin at 9 AM all three days of the competition.
