Storrs, Conn. - The Holy Cross men's tennis team traveled to the UConn Invitational in Storrs, Conn. on Friday and Saturday, facing some strong competition in both their singles and doubles matches. Senior Brian Kelly (Winchester, Mass.) saw the competition's first success on Friday afternoon. Kelly took on Henrik Alstrom from URI and won the match in three close sets: 7-6, 3-6, 10-8. Kelly would be back on the court Saturday facing Marist's Pedro Genovese. Genovese would take the match in two sets, 6-0, 6-0. In other Flight 1 action, sophomore Angelo Sica (Chester, N.J.) would face Joey Michael's from the host school. Sica would lose the match 7-6. 6-1.
In Flight 2, senior Marco Lombardo (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) was defeated by Quinnipiac's Michael Racioppo in three sets. Lombardo took the first set, 6-3, but his opponent would recover to take the next two, 6-3, 10-3. Freshman John Burke (Burlington, Mass.) was defeated by UConn's Christian Malerba in two sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Sophomore Jay DeSanto (Dalton, PA) and senior Tom Moran (Concord, N.H.) would both win matches in Flight 3 action. DeSanto won his first match against Ben Geller from Fairfield, 6-4, 7-5. DeSanto would not be as successful in his second match. He lost to Matthew Cook from Sacred Heart, 7-5, 6-2. Moran would defeat a player from Sacred Heart in a convincing victory, 6-4, 6-1. Moran would then fall to Fairfield's Balazs Szikla in two sets, 6-1, 6-1.
On the double's courts, Holy Cross faced tough competition, losing matches to pairs BU and Fairfield. In Flight A, the Crusaders lost to BU 8-5. Holy Cross' number two entry would also lose to Fairfield, 8-6. In Flight B, Holy Cross would lose to Fairfield 8-5.
The Crusaders are back on the courts October 7 and 8, traveling to the Stonehill Invitational in Easton, Mass. Matches are scheduled to begin at 9:00.
