Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's tennis team dominated on the doubles court Saturday against Merrimack in Worcester, Mass. The Crusaders took all three doubles matches from the visiting Warriors, aiding them in the 5-2 victory. The doubles pair of sophomore Angelo Sica (Chester, N.J.) and senior Brian Kelly (Winchester, Mass.) defeated Merrimack's Dan Hrobak and John Seaward 8-5. In singles action, Kelly defeated Merrimack's Adam Wilding in a convincing two set victory. Kelly took the match 6-2, 6-2. Sica was defeated by doubles opponent Seaward, 6-2, 6-2.
Senior Marco Lombardo (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) and freshman John Burke (Burlington, Mass.) won their match by defeating Wilding and Joe Collins, 8-6. Burke and Lombardo would go 1-1 on the singles courts. Burke would defeat Merrimack's Hrobak in three sets 3-6. 6-3, 10-4, while Lombardo would lose a tough three set match to Steve Viglione. Lombardo lost the first set in a tiebreak 6-7 (7-5), come back to win the second set 7-5, but couldn't maintain the momentum losing the third set 10-8.
The Crusader doubles pair of sophomore Jay DeSanto (Dalton, Pa.) and senior Tom Moran (Concord, N.H.) would both win individually and as a team. DeSanto/Moran would defeat Brian Reilly and Viglione 8-6. Moran would not be done with Reilly for the day, beating him in their singles match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. DeSanto would take on Collins and win convincingly 6-0, 6-3.
The victory moves Holy Cross to a 1-0 record for the 2006 fall season. Merrimack drops to 0-1.
The Crusaders are back on the court Tuesday, September 19 at 3:15pm. Holy Cross will take on Hartford at home in Worcester.
