Norton, Mass. - The Crusaders were in Norton, Mass., at the Wheaton Invitational on Sunday, September 16. Holy Cross fared well in a tournament which included both singles and doubles play.
In the first singles match up freshman Matt Wierzel, (Garden City, N.Y), went up against Justin Tardif of Colby-Sawyer, with Wierzel posting a 6-0, 6-4 victory. In the finals of the first singles, Wierzel defeated Pauri Pandian of Wesleyan 7-5, 7-5.
Junior Angelo Sica (Chester, N.J) competed against a player from Wesleyan in his first match and won 6-1, 6-3. He then went on to compete in the finals against Wesleyan's Michael Frank where he was defeated 6-1, 6-3.
In the first round of doubles, freshman Kevin Leggio (Coram, N.Y) and senior John Burke (Dover, Mass) took on Colby-Sawyer, and were defeated 8-6. In the consolation finals Leggio and Burke defeated Wheaton 9-8 (7-4 in the tiebreaker).
In second doubles, sophomore Dan Phelan (Chicopee, Mass) and senior Matthew Vicidomino (Dover, Mass) were defeated by Wesleyan 8-3. In the consolation finals Phelan and Vicidomino were overtaken by Colby-Sawyer 9-7.
The Crusaders will compete again on Saturday, September 22, at New London, Conn., against Coast Guard. The match is set to start at 2:30 p.m.
