Fairfield, Conn. - The Holy Cross men's tennis team kicked off their fall tennis schedule against a variety of opponents in Saturday's Fairfield Doubles Festival in Fairfield, Conn. In Flight one Pool A, the doubles pair of senior Brian Kelly (Winchester, Mass.) and freshman John Burke (Burlington, Mass.) started out their day with a victory against UConn, 9-8 (2). They would then lose two consecutive matches against Fairfield by a score of 8-1 and Quinnipiac by a score of (8-5). When the round robin was over, the two Crusaders placed them selves in the seventh place match, where they would defeat a pair from Sacred Heart, 8-5.
In Flight two, sophomore Angelo Sica (Chester, N.J.) and senior Marco Lombardo (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) were defeated by teams from Rhode Island (8-6), Fairfield (8-2) and Hartford (8-1). The pair had their strongest match against Rhode Island, where the final score was 8-6. The Crusaders found themselves in the seventh place match, where they would get defeated by a team from Sacred Heart by a score of 8-3.
Flight three saw a total of four Crusaders get into matches. The first pair up was sophomore Jay DeSanto (Dalton, Pa.) and senior Tom Moran (Concord, N.H.) who would split their two matches, winning one against Sacred heart by a score of 8-1, but would lose to a pair from UConn, 8-1. Sophomores Brendan McElhenny (Huntington, N.Y.) and Thomas Steinert (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) would take over the rest of the matches in flight three. The pair would drop a match to Quinnipiac, but would rebound to defeat Sacred Heart to secure the fifth place finish in flight three.
The men's tennis takes on Merrimack at home on Saturday, September 16 at 12 noon. The Crusaders continue a full weekend of tennis at the Wheaton Invitational, in Norton, Mass., on Sunday, September 17 starting at 9:00 am.
