WORCESTER, Mass. - The Crusaders only dropped nine total games as the Holy Cross men's tennis team defeated American International, 7-0, on Wednesday afternoon at the Holy Cross Tennis Courts. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 3-9, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 0-6.
The Crusaders earned the doubles point as they won all three matches. At No. 1 doubles, junior John Burke (Burlington, Mass.) and freshman Ajeya Shekar (Shrewsbury, Mass.) defeated Robert Lubold and Leo Santos, 8-4, while at No. 2 doubles, junior Dan Phelan (Chicopee, Mass.) and freshman Chris Das (Melrose, Mass.) took the match over Alex Touhey and Jake Anderson, 8-1. The No. 3 doubles team of senior Brendan McElhenny (Huntington, N.Y.) and freshman Dan Sheehan (Huntington, N.Y.) defeated Brett Barry and Eric Stutman by a score of 8-1. This was Sheehan's collegiate debut.
At No. 1 singles, sophomore Matt Wierzel (Garden City, N.Y.) defeated Lubold, 6-1, 6-0, while Burke won the No. 2 singles match over Santos, 6-2, 6-0. The Crusaders swept the other four singles matches by scores of 6-0, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, Phelan defeated Touhey, while Das defeated Anderson, at No. 4 singles. Shekar won the No. 5 singles match over Barry and senior Tom Steinert (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) swept the No. 6 singles match from Stutman.
The Crusaders return to action on April 3, when they play at Patriot League opponent Army at 8:00 p.m.
