Men's Tennis Prepares For 2010 Patriot League Tournament

  • Holy Cross ended its regular season last week and will begin postseason play at the 2010 Patriot League Tournament, hosted by Bucknell this upcoming weekend. The quarterfinals round will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 23at the Varsity Tennis Courts in Lewisburg, Pa.
  • The Crusaders enter the Patriot League tournament as the No. 7 seed and will play against the No. 2 seed, Navy. The Midshipmen have recorded four wins and one loss in conference play while posting an even 13-13 record overall. They were also picked as the preseason favorite to win the Patriot League Championship title. Holy Cross is winless in Patriot League play after falling to Army, Lehigh and Lafayette earlier this season. Friday's meeting will serve as the first time the teams have competed against each other in program history.
  • Holy Cross has faced two other league opponents in post season play. In 2007 and 2008 the Crusaders faced Army, falling 4-0 both times. Last year, the team matched up with Colgate in the first round, falling 4-0. Four of the current members on the 2009-2010 men's tennis roster have competed against Patriot League opponents in a postseason setting. Junior Matt Wierzel (Garden City, N.Y.) and seniors Dan Phelan (Chicopee, Mass.) and John Burke (Burlington, Mass.) are 0-2 while sophomore Chris Das (Melrose, Mass.) is 0-1 along with senior Tom Steinert (Rockville Centre, N.Y.). This is also the first time the Crusaders have played a match on Bucknell's Varsity Tennis Courts.
