EASTON, Mass. - Holy Cross junior Matt Wierzel (Garden City, N.Y.) registered his second tournament title of the fall topping Central Connecticut's George King in the finals of the Stonehill Invitational No. 1 Singles Tennis Championship, 6-3, 6-2 Sunday. With his win, Wierzel now has an 11-1 record in tournament play this fall.
In day one of the Invitational, Wierzel topped Nichols' Stephen Carella for the second time this season, 6-0, 6-3. He then beat out host Stonehill's No. 1 singles player, Michael Mashkevich, in the second round, 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 to advance to the finals. Wierzel then breezed through the finals in straight sets against King to take home the Stonehill Invitational Championship title.
Merrimack took home the team title, finishing the invitational with 20 points. Holy Cross tied for second with 14 points along with Connecticut College and Stonehill. Rounding out the team scores were Nichols (12), Salve Regina (8), Bridgewater State (2) and Curry (1).
Holy Cross will compete in its first fall home match of the fall, taking on Merrimack this upcoming Saturday, Oct. 10. Matches will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Holy Cross Tennis Courts in Worcester, Mass.
