  • The Holy Cross men's tennis team takes on a team that they beat twice last year, traveling to Hartford, Conn. to play against Hartford Sept. 22. Matches begin at 4:00 p.m. at the Hartford Tennis Courts. In the fall of 2008, junior Matt Wierzel (Garden City, N.Y.) came away with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 victory at No. 1 singles against Hartford's Ricky Dove. Three other players won their singles matches and two of three doubles tandems won to give Holy Cross the final 5-2 triumph.
  • The team will also compete in the Connecticut Invitational for the first time since the 2007 fall season. The weekend competition begins on Friday, Sept. 25 at 9:00 a.m. in Storrs, Conn. and continues until Sunday, Sept. 27. At the 2007 tournament, (bracket play single elimination), Wierzel received a bye in the first round of play. In the second round of play he was defeated, 6-3, 6-4 by Sacred Heart's Kirrill Kasyanov. Senior Dan Phelan (Chicopee, Mass.) played in the fourth flight of the tournament. He received a bye in the first round, then was defeated 6-0, 6-1 in the second round.
  • Wierzel continued his unbeaten streak as he took home AT&T Crusader of the Week honors for his performances from the first week of action. Currently, he holds a 7-0 record in dual and tournament play. He is just two wins shy of tying his nine singles victories from the entire 2008-2009 season. He also tied his doubles wins from 2008-2009 with senior John Burke (Burlington, Mass.) as they won against Nichols' team of Stephen Carella and Justin Deluca on Saturday.
  • The Crusaders have won a total of seven singles and a doubles matches this fall for a total of nine total team points (excluding tournament play). They are just one point away from tying their total fall points from 2008.
