Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross swimming and diving teams both fell to Springfield College in the opening meet of the season. The Pride swept both the men's and women's competition at the Hart Center Pool. Taking the men's event the Pride totaled 155 points to the Crusaders' 84. The Springfield women also cruised 152-91.
Highlighting the meet for the Crusaders was the team win in the women's 400-yard medley relay to start the meet. Emily Ferris (Rockville Center, N.Y.), Maddie Alanis (La Jolla, Calif.), Andrea Doherty (Needham, Mass.) and Erica Archer (Schenectady, N.Y.) finished in a time of 4:11.60.
Taking first place in individual heats were Christopher Smith (West Haven, Conn.) in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:54.04), who edged out Anthony Bruno of Springfield by six-hundredths of a second, along with Andrea Doherty and Brian Jackson (Phoenixville, Pa.) in the 200-yard butterfly, who finished in 2:18.08 and 2:07.07, respectively. Also winning individual competitions were Kyle McNickle (Rockville, Md.) in the 100-yard freestyle (57.34) and Emily Ferris in the 200-yard backstroke (2:15.09).
The Crusader women will compete next against Siena at home on Wed., Nov. 2 at 7:00 p.m. The next meet for the men is at New Hampshire (Durham, N.H.) on Thurs., Nov. 3 at 6:00 p.m.
