Men's Swimming & Diving Reclaims WCC Title

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's swimming and diving team claimed their third ever Worcester City Championship Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center Pool. Competing against Clark and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Holy Cross prevailed over the annual two-day event that crowns the Worcester City Champion. The Crusaders earned a total of 399 points on the weekend. WPI came in a close second, accruing 383 points and Clark took third with 206 points.

The Championship title came down to the final event of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Holy Cross had to win in order to ensure victory. The relay team of freshman Aaron Brosnan (Westford, Mass.), junior Chris Smith (West Haven, Conn.), sophomores Rob Acker (Ames, Iowa) and David Drummond (Swampscott, Mass.) finished the event in 3:21.56, beating out two teams from WPI to win the Worcester City Championship for the first time in three years.

Freshman Brian Livingston (Auburn, Wa.) was the first Crusader swimmer to claim an event win, taking first in the 100-yard breaststroke. His time of 1:06.03 beat his closest competitor by over two seconds. Senior Brian Jackson won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:09.40, giving the Crusaders 11 points towards their total.

Drummond finished the 100-yard freestyle in 51.34, earning himself first place. Acker took third in the event, touching the pad in 51.51. Sophomores James McCullough (Orefield, Pa.) and Ian MacLaren (Cortez, Colo.) finished within .01 of a second to take fifth and sixth, in 52.29 and 52.30 respectively.

Senior Brian Jackson (Phoenixville, Pa.) won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:09.40, as classmate Kevin Mullaney (Livingston, N.J.) took fourth in the event. Mullaney finished in 2:15.46.

Freshman diver Joshua Rodriguez (Dudley, Mass.) swept the diving events, winning off of both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.

The Crusader men will return to action, taking on Fairfield on Saturday, February 3. The meet is set to begin at 1:00 pm in the Hart Center Pool.
