ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The men's swimming and diving team completed the first full day of competition on Thursday at the 2014 Patriot League Championship after opening the four-day event on Wednesday afternoon. The 200-yard medley relay team set the pace for the Crusaders yesterday, setting a new Holy Cross record with a time of 1:35.72. The team was comprised of junior Thomas Horigan (West Hartford, Conn.), junior Jack Swain (West Hartford, Conn.), sophomore Tyler Wright (Waterboro, Maine) and senior Jan Yburan (Livingston, N.J.).
Fourteen Crusaders took to the pool this morning for preliminary heats in three separate events. Sophomore David Mullany (Monroe, Conn.) led the team in the 500-yard freestyle with a career-fastest time of 4:48.81, bettering his previously standard from last year's championship by just under 10 seconds.
Swain led the Crusader field in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:00.14, improving his career-fastest time in the event by .52 seconds. Yburan was the top Holy Cross finisher in the 50-yard freestyle, touching the wall at 21.71 and tying his career-best mark.
Other personal-best performances on the day came from senior Zachary Cietek (Guilderland, N.Y.) (4:57.19) in the 500 free, sophomore Max Kearns (Marion, Mass.) (2:01.25), freshman Andrew Higgins (New Canaan, Conn.) (2:01.69) and senior Tim Liddy (Garden City, N.Y.) (2:02.21) in the 200 IM and senior Patrick Gibbons (Reston, Va.) (22.82), freshman Alexander Young (Natick, Mass.) (22.93) and senior Anthony Russo (Stratford, Conn.) (23.62) in the 50 free.
Yesterday, the 800-yard freestyle relay team also competed and finished at 7:14.67. Swimmers included Mullany, Kearns, Cietek and Young. Tonight, Yburan, Horigan, Gibbons and Wright finished the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:27.21.
The men's swimming and diving team will continue action at the 2014 Patriot League Championship tomorrow, Feb. 21, at 10:30 a.m.
