FAIRFIELD, Conn – The men's swimming and diving team opened 2013-2014 dual competition with a victory over Fairfield on Saturday afternoon on the road by a score of 151-146. The Crusaders earned seven first place finishes as senior Jan Yburan (Livingston, N.J.) touched the wall first in the 50 and 100-meter freestyles and 100-meter backstroke.
Yburan finished with times 24.94 (50 free), 53.83 (100 free) and 1:02.36 (100 back). He was also the anchor leg of the 200-meter medley relay team that took first place with a time of 1:51.19. The team included juniors Thomas Horigan (West Hartford, Conn.) and Jack Swain (West Hartford, Conn.), sophomore Tyler Wright (Waterboro, Maine) and Yburan. Swain finished first in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:08.92 and freshman Andrew Higgins (New Canaan, Conn.) won the 200-meter breaststroke. Wright also won the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:00.83.
Other top finishers for the Crusaders included senior Zachary Cietek (Guilderland, N.Y.) who took second in 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:05.77. Horigan finished second behind Yburan in the 100 back (1:05.12) and added another second place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:23.83). Higgins landed second behind Swain in the 100 breast (1:09.75) and Swain took the runner-up spot behind Higgins in the 200 breast (2:37.72). Swain also finished second in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:21.96. The 400-meter freestyle relay team comprised of junior Andrew Olivieri (Newark, Del.), Horigan, senior Patrick Gibbons (Reston, Va.) and Wright finished with a time of 3:49.92.
On the diving side, senior Nick Videtti (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) led the Crusaders with a third place finish in both the one and three-meter dives with scores of 188.33 and 233.85, respectively.
Holy Cross will return to action on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 18-19, at the New England Catholic Invitational.
