ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Holy Cross men's swimming and diving team competed in the second day of Patriot league Championship competition on Friday at the Naval Academy. Junior Brian Power (Southport, Conn.) set a new school record in the 100 yard breaststroke in the preliminary heat with a time of 58.42 to advance and compete in the night session. Power finished 16th overall with a time of 59.24 in the final. The 200 yard medley relay team consisting of sophomore Jan Yburan (Livingston, N.J.), Power, freshman Michael Brower (Falling Waters, W.Va.) and junior John Vatalaro (Strongville, Ohio) also set a new school record finishing with a time of 1:38.83.
Yburan qualified as an alternate for the night session with a time of 54.32 in the 100 yard backstroke, finishing 18th overall. Other top finishers for the Crusaders included Kevin O'Connor (Ridgewood, N.J.) who finished 21st in the 400 yard IM with a time of 4:31.56, Brower who took 27th in the 100 yard butterfly finishing at 53.81 and junior Brian Lyons (Greenwich, Conn.) who finished 28th in the 200 yard freestyle at 1:48.25.
After two days of competition, Navy remains in the top spot with a team total of 677.5. The Patriot League Championship will conclude tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 18, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
