Worcester, Mass. - Holy Cross men's soccer junior goalie Richard Whipple (Columbus, GA/Shaw) has been named the BRINE Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week for his performance in a 1-0 decision over Navy on Saturday October 2nd. Last week, Whipple earned his first-career honor. The Crusaders had a shortened week due to a rain-out in their Tuesday night contest at Hartford.
On Saturday, Whipple made 4 saves in an exciting match with the Naval Academy which was won on a Yannick James tally with 11 seconds remaining in the game. Whipple made a handful of key saves late in the second to lift the Crusaders to their first league win this season.
The junior netminder now was 4 shutouts in 5 Crusader wins this year. In 7 starts, he has only given up 3 goals and boasts a 0.31 goals-against average. Whipple also has a .914 save percentage.
Whipple and the Crusaders next take the field on Saturday October 9th in a 1:00 game against American.
