WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior defender Jerry Dickinson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) has been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Mid Atlantic Region first team and senior defender Alejandro Melean (Miami, Fla.) received second team honors. Finishing with a 9-5-5 record, the Holy Cross men's soccer team ended the 2008 season falling to Colgate, 2-1, in the Patriot League championship game on Nov. 16. The Crusaders reached the championship game after tying American, 1-1, and then winning in penalty kicks during the Patriot League semifinals game on Nov. 14. This year marked the third time the Crusaders have played in the league championship game.
Starting in all 19 games this year, Dickinson was named the 2008 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, making him the third player in school history to receive the award. He also earned first team All-Patriot League honors for the first time in his career. A three-time captain, he led the defense to a national ranking of 20th in goals against average (0.71), 27th in save percentage (0.831), 31st in shutout percentage (0.47) and 42nd in winning percentage (0.647) during the regular season. On offense, he finished second on the team in scoring with three goals and one assist for seven points, including one game-winning goal. He received his first career ECAC and Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors for the week of Sept. 15, after rallying Holy Cross to a 3-2 win over Northeastern, scoring two goals.
Melean made 19 starts on defense for Holy Cross and received his second career All-Patriot League first team honor. He finished fifth on the team in scoring with one goal and three assists for five points, including one game-winner. In the Crusaders' season-opener against No. 13 Massachusetts, Melean scored the lone goal of the game, leading Holy Cross to a 1-0 victory. He also was named to the Soccer News National Team of the Week for the week of Aug. 31 and Soccer America Men's Team of the Week for the week of Sept. 2.
Colgate's Alex Weekes was the only other Patriot League player named to the All-Mid Atlantic Region First Team. David Cappuccio (Colgate), Glen Volk (Colgate), Adam Gazda (Lehigh), Conor O'Brien (Bucknell) and B.J. Glenn (Lafayette) were named to the second team. Cooper Bryant (American), Jim Taranto (Lehigh) and Chris Ross (Colgate) were named to the third team.
