Worcester, Mass. - Holy Cross sophomore Marsalis Beckford (Brantford, Ontario) and freshman Andreas Andrews (Los Angeles, Calif.) were named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week and the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, respectively, through games of October 16, as announced by conference officials this morning. This is the first league award for both players.
In the Crusaders' 4-1 win over defending League champion American on Sunday, Beckford had a hand in all four goals, tallying two scores and two assists, while Andrews recorded two assists, including the pass on the game-winning goal, which was scored by Beckford.
The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Crusaders, and gave Beckford four goals in as many league games this year. He has now scored in each of the last three games.
Beckford had a goal and two assists in the first 15 minutes of the game to lead the Crusaders to a 3-0 lead at the break. He assisted on a pair of scores by junior captain Josh Trott (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and scored what would be the game-winning goal on a header inside the box after a cross from deep in the right corner of the field by Andrews. Early in the second half, after American cut the lead to 3-1, Beckford broke through the defense and added an insurance goal for the Crusaders just 18 seconds after the Eagles got on the board. Andrews assisted on the play.
Beckford has played in all 12 games this season and ranks second on the team in both goals (five) and total points (13). He is also tied for second in assists (three). This is Beckford's first weekly award of the season, and the fifth for Holy Cross.
Andrews continues to play well for the Crusaders in the midfield. The freshman is one of just five players on the team to have started all 12 games this season, and after his two assists on Sunday, he leads the team in that category. With one goal and four helpers on the season, he ranks fourth on the team in total points (six).
Holy Cross (6-6 overall, 1-3 Patriot League) returns to action this Saturday, Oct. 22, when it travels to West Point, N.Y., for a 1:00 p.m. game with Army.
