WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross senior defender Alejandro Melean (Miami, Fla.) has been named the BRINE men's soccer Defensive Player of the Week in the Patriot League for competition from August 25-31, which the Crusaders posted a 1-0 record. Melean led Holy Cross to a 1-0 victory over 13th-ranked Massachusetts in its opening game of the season. This is the first defensive League award in Melean's career.
Less than ten minutes into the first half, at the 9:46 mark, the Crusaders took a 1-0 lead. A foul by UMass set up the scoring play for the Crusaders as sophomore Jon Werth (University Park, Md.) crossed a pass to Melean who headed the ball into the goal. Melean also greatly contributed to the stellar team defensive effort to post a shutout.
The men's soccer team returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 2, when it plays host to Central Connecticut at 7:00 p.m.
