Washington, D.C. - David Marut scored two goals and assisted on another to lift American University to a 5-1 win over Holy Cross in a Patriot League contest on Saturday afternoon.
Holy Cross slips to 5-2-1 (1-1-1), while American improves to 7-4-2 (3-0-0).
The Eagles took an early 1-0 lead just 10 minutes into the game when senior Shawn Kuykendall collected a cross and beat Crusader keeper Richard Whipple. American then went up 2-0 on Marut's first goal of the game at the 18:29 mark, which gave the hosts a two-goal lead at the half.
The Crusaders battled back in the second and cut the lead to one when sophomore Josh Trott took a Michael Coakley pass and beat Eagles' keeper Tom Myers in the 61st minute. That was as close as the Crusaders would get, however, as Marut struck again just two minutes after Trott's tally to give the Eagles another two-goal cushion. Nick Zaron and Freddy Llerena rounded out the scoring for American.
Whipple came into the game as the reigning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for the past two weeks. He had only given up 3 goals in the team's previous 7 games, and had led the league with a .031 goals-against average. He finished the game with 7 saves, while his counterpart Myers registered 3 on the day.
The two teams played a physical game, totaling 28 fouls (HC-15, AU-13), 6 yellow cards (HC-4, AU-2), and one red card (HC).
The Crusaders will host Harvard University on Tuesday at the Hart Soccer Field. Game time is 4 p.m.
