Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's soccer team defeated New Jersey Technical Institute 3-0 in a non-conference game on Saturday at the Hart Soccer Field.
Junior Kevin Leonard (Unionville, Conn.) got the Crusaders on the board first midway through the first half after a corner by Anthony Cinelli (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) was deflected in the box. Leonard gathered the ball and blasted a shot past Highlander keeper Collin Cunning to give Holy Cross the only goal they would need.
The Crusaders then added an insurance goal on a Yannick James (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tally after 66 minutes of play. Sophomore Alex Cruz (Conyers, Ga.) dribbled past three defenders to get into the box and fired a low shot that was stopped by Cunning, but James was right there for the rebound to put Holy Cross up 2-0.
Ten minutes later, Holy Cross put the game away when sophomore Michael Coakley (Tiverton, R.I.) scored his first goal of the season after a nice leading pass from sophomore Josh Trott (Glen Cove, N.Y.).
Holy Cross controlled much of the game did not allow one New Jersey Tech shot in the first half. They outshot the Highlanders 14-3 on the afternoon. Junior Richard Whipple (Columbus, Ga.) recorded his second shutout of the season with three saves. Cunning finished with 11 saves on the day.
The Crusaders next take the field on Tuesday, September 14, when they travel to Sacred Heart for a 4:00 p.m. game.
