Men's Soccer Advances To Patriot League Finals

HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Holy Cross men's soccer team advanced to the 2008 Patriot League Championship game after winning a shootout against American on Friday in the semifinals at Van Doren Field at Colgate.
Less than 27 minutes into the first half, at the 26:06 mark, sophomore forward Kyle Miller (Woodbury, N.J.) grabbed a rebound from an American defender and put a shot past Eagles' goalkeeper Matt Makowski.
Just under 11 minutes into the second half, at the 55:12 mark, Daniel Shannon crossed the ball to David Menzie, who chipped the ball into far side of the net, making the score, 1-1.
The Crusaders' converted all five penalty kick attempts, scored by senior defender Alejandro Melean (Miami, Fla.), sophomore midfielder Jon Werth (University Park, Md.), senior midfielder Andreas Andrews (Los Angeles, Calif.), Miller and senior defender Jerry Dickinson (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Phil Purdy, Karsten Smith and Shannon scored the three penalty kicks for American.
Junior goalkeeper Thomas Booth (Patchogue, N.Y.) had seven stops for Holy Cross while Makowski had one save.
Holy Cross who finished in third place in the regular season is now 9-4-5 and will face top-seeded Colgate in the Patriot League Championship game on Sunday, November 16, at Van Doren Field.
