Worcester, Mass. - Junior Josh Trott (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and sophomore Marsalis Beckford (Brantford, Ontario) each scored two goals to lead the Holy Cross men's soccer team to a crucial Patriot League win over American, 4-1, on Sunday morning at Assumption College. The Crusaders snap a four-game losing streak and get back to the .500 mark (6-6, 1-3 Patriot League) with the win. The Eagles fall to 3-7-1 (2-2 Patriot League) on the season.
Holy Cross took a 3-0 lead into the half after scoring three times in the first 15 minutes of the match. Trott put the Crusaders on the board just 3:13 into the game after converting on a pass from Beckford. Beckford then scored on a header after freshman Andreas Andrews' (Los Angeles, Calif.) cross from the right side at the 7:06 mark to give HC a quick 2-0 lead.
Just over seven minutes later, Trott struck again when the junior forward beat American keeper Chris Sedlak after a physical play at the top of the 18 yard line. Trott's second goal of the day and eighth of the season gave the Crusaders a 3-0 lead at the 14:37 mark.
American ruined the Crusaders' shutout bid when Phil Purdy blasted a shot from 25 yards out just 2:48 into the second stanza. Coco Del Rio was credited with the assist. But less than 18 seconds later, Beckford tallied his second goal of the game to give HC a 4-1 cushion. Andrews recorded his second assist of the day on the play.
American outshot the Crusaders 10-9 for the game and 7-4 in the second half.
Holy Cross goalie Richard Whipple (Columbus, Ga.) made six saves to record his sixth victory of the season, while Sedlak had four stops for the Eagles.
The Crusaders travel to West Point, N.Y., on Saturday, October 22 for a 1:00 p.m. match-up with Army.
