Worcester, Mass. - Lehigh junior John O'Reilly scored on a penalty kick at the 72:22 mark and the Mountain Hawks were able to hold off Holy Cross the rest of the way for a 2-1 conference win at the Hart Soccer Field on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders have now lost three straight and fall to 5-5 (0-2 Patriot League), while Lehigh improves to 6-1-1 (2-0 Patriot League) on its second straight win.
Holy Cross took an early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when sophomore Marsalis Beckford (Brantford, Ontario) one-timed a nice set up pass by fellow sophomore Sefton Kincaid (Orlando, Fla.) into the back of the Lehigh net.
But the Mountain Hawks evened the score at the 42:42 mark after Peter Classi rifled a shot to the top shelf to tie the game at 1-1 going into halftime.
O'Reilly then made good on his penalty kick chance following an intentional Holy Cross hand ball in the box in the 72nd minute, giving Lehigh the game-winning score. Recording just one shot in the second half, the Crusaders were unable to muster any offense from that point on.
Holy Cross goalie Richard Whipple (Columbus, Ga.) made five saves on the afternoon. Lehigh's Charlie Sales had two stops, while recording his sixth win of the season.
The Mountain Hawks enjoyed a 13-5 shot advantage and had an 8-2 edge on corner kicks.
Holy Cross travels to Navy next Saturday, October 8 for a 7:00 p.m. match with the Mids in Annapolis, Md.
