Albany, N.Y. - Four different Crusaders scored as the Holy Cross men's soccer team cruised to a 4-0 non-conference victory over Canisius in the second round of the Albany Showcase on Sunday afternoon. The Crusaders have now won two straight and get back to the .500 mark, improving to 2-2 on the season. Canisius drops to 0-3-2.
Sophomore Chide Okpoebo opened the scoring in the 13th minute when he headed in a cross from freshman Andreas Andrews, giving Holy Cross what would be the only goal it would need.
A little over three minutes later, junior captain Josh Trott gave the Crusaders a 2-0 lead after placing a rebound off of a penalty kick in the back of the Canisius net.
Holy Cross took the 2-0 advantage into halftime and tacked on two more goals in the second stanza for the win.
Freshman Alejandro Melean scored on a header, again off of an Andrews cross for a 3-0 HC cushion in the 61st minute. Freshman Felipe Castrillon closed out the scoring when he tacked on his second goal of the tournament after a breakaway effort at the 76:43 mark.
Senior goalie Richard Whipple made two saves on the afternoon to record the win. Holy Cross enjoyed a 19-6 shot advantage and held the Griffs to just two shots on goal.
Castrillon, Trott, Whipple, and senior sweeper Kevin Leonard all represented Holy Cross on the All-Tournament Team.
Holy Cross kicks off a two-game home stand beginning Wednesday, September 14, when it hosts Sacred Heart in the season home opener at 4:00 p.m. The Crusaders then take on the University at Albany on Saturday, September 17 at 4:00 p.m. Both games will be at the Hart Soccer Field.
