WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior defender Alejandro Melean (Miami, Fla.) scored the game-winning goal as the Holy Cross men's soccer team outlasted No. 13 Massachusetts, 1-0, Friday night in front of a record-breaking crowd of 868 at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. Last year, UMass advanced to the NCAA Final Four. With the win, the Crusaders start the season 1-0, while the Minutemen begin the year with a 0-1 record.
Less than ten minutes into the first half, At the 9:46 mark, the Crusaders took a 1-0 lead. A foul by UMass set up the scoring play for the Crusaders as sophomore Jon Werth (University Park, Md.) crossed a pass to Melean who headed the ball into the goal.
UMass had several scoring opportunities in the final minutes of the game including a shot that hit the front of the cross bar and landed right in front of the goal. The Crusaders' strong defense was able to clear the ball from the box to secure the win over the Minutemen.
Junior Thomas Booth (Patchogue, N.Y.) earned his first shutout of the season and made two stops for Holy Cross. The Minutemen's Zack Simmons had two saves.
The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, September 2, when they host Central Connecticut at 7:00 p.m.
