Aug. 27, 2005

Worcester, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's soccer team fell to Fairfield University, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Hart Soccer Field in its final exhibition game of the preseason.

The game's only goal came in the fourth minute of play when the Stags put a rebound off of a corner kick past Holy Cross goalie Richard Whipple. Whipple made the initial save off of the first Fairfield rebound, but the Stag forwards were able to capitalize on the deflected shot.

Whipple finished the scrimmage with two saves on the afternoon, while the rest of the HC squad managed seven shots on the day.

Saturday's scrimmage was the Crusaders' final tune up of the preseason before they kick off the 2005 season at the Philips/Adidas Classic in Piscataway, N.J., on Friday, September 2. While in New Jersey, the Crusaders, who were recently voted sixth in this season's Patriot League preseason poll, will face St.John's University and Rutgers.

The following weekend, Holy Cross will match up with St. Francis (N.Y.) (Sept. 10) and Canisius (Sept. 11) at the Albany Showcase in Albany, N.Y. The Crusaders then come home to meet up with Sacred Heart in their home opener on September 14. Patriot League competition for the Crusaders begins on Saturday, September 24, with a 1:00 p.m. match-up at Bucknell.

The Crusaders are coming off a 7-6-2 (1-4-2) campaign which tied for sixth place in the Patriot League a year ago.
