WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross junior forward Josh Cintas (San Diego, Calif.) scored the game-winning marker in the 61st minute to propel the Crusaders to a 1-0 triumph over Bryant in non-conference men's soccer action this evening at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. With the victory, Holy Cross improves to 4-8-2 on the year, while the Bulldogs slip to 5-8-1.
After a scoreless first half in which Holy Cross held a 5-3 shot advantage, the Crusaders were finally able to break the stalemate with Cintas' goal at 60:25. Junior midfielder Tommy Uttaro (Staten Island, N.Y.) crossed the ball from the right side where it was initially headed by classmate Kevin O'Connell (Basking Ridge, N.J.). The ball bounced into the air where Cintas headed it home for his team leading sixth marker of the season. The goal is also his team-best second game-winner of the year.
Bryant had a great opportunity to score in the 79th minute when Connor Norat fired a shot from point blank range, but Holy Cross freshman goalkeeper Kevin Wright (McKinney, Texas) stood tall and pushed away the scoring chance.
The Bulldogs looked as if they would tie the game again in the 88th minute, as a shot found the back of the cage, but an offside call nullified the chance on net.
Wright performed well in net for the Crusaders as he made a pair of saves for his third shutout of the season. Bryant keeper Chris Knaub pushed aside five shots in the losing effort.
Holy Cross held a slim 12-9 advantage in shots and also led in corner kicks, 7-2. The Crusaders also had a 6-2 edge in shots on goal.
Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, October 27, as it will host Navy at 7:00 p.m. on "Senior Day" at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium.
