Men's Soccer Ties Bucknell, 1-1 In Patriot League Play
WORCESTER, MASS. – Holy Cross freshman midfielder Luke Melody (Mansfield, Conn.) scored the only goal of the afternoon for the Crusaders as the Holy Cross men's soccer team tied Bucknell, 1-1, in a Patriot League contest at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. Holy Cross is now 2-7-2 on the season and 1-1-2 in the conference, while the Bison are 5-4-4 on the year and 1-1-2 in league play.
Melody scored the first marker of the contest when he headed in a ball off a corner kick by senior midfielder Pat McCann (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) at the 22:49 mark of the game. Bucknell would answer less than four minutes later as Josh Plump would score an unassisted goal in the 27th minute to tie the score at 1-1. Both goals were the second of the season for each player.
With the score knotted, the Bison would unleash an 11-1 shot advantage in the second half, but the Crusaders would not allow any quality chances as none found the net. In the beginning of the first overtime, Bucknell had a great chance to win the game as Jesse Klug launched a shot in the goalie box that was kicked aside by junior defender Dane Kenny (Williston Park, N.Y.), to prevent the loss.
Holy Cross freshman goaltender Kevin Wright (McKinney, Texas) made three saves, while his counterpart Mike Lansing pushed aside six shots.
Although the Bison held a 21-9 shot advantage in the game, the Crusaders held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Holy Cross was unable to get a shot on the net in the two overtime periods. Bucknell held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Crusaders will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 16, as they will host New Hampshire at 7:00 p.m. at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. The game can be viewed on Crusader Vision.
