ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Holy Cross men's soccer team fell in its second straight overtime contest, 2-1, against conference foe Navy at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. With the loss, the Crusaders combine for a record of 1-13-2 (0-6-0 Patriot League) while the Mids move to 7-7-3 (3-2-1 PL). Sophomore Monty Sanders (Temecula, Calif.) netted his third goal of the season in the effort.
The team's played a scoreless first half with the Crusaders outshooting the Mids, 6-4. Freshman netminder Michael Thompson (Cromwell, Conn.) made two saves while Sanders put two shots on-goal. Navy went ahead 1-0 on its third shot attempt of the second half, scoring at the 57:46 mark. Uttaro then scored less than five minutes later, at 62:03, beating out the center defense. Fellow sophomore Tommy Uttaro (Staten Island, N.Y.) picked up the assist on the play, his second of the season.
Navy added six more shots in the second half as Thompson made two more saves. Holy Cross attempted three more shots, but neither team scored as the Crusaders found themselves in their second straight overtime contest. The Mids quickly earned a corner kick almost three minutes into the overtime and capitalized on the opportunity, scoring at 93:58 and ending the game.
With the final, Thompson picks up the loss, going to 1-7-2 on the season. He finished with four saves. Navy goalkeeper, Max Renaldo, finished the game with five saves and collects a record of 2-0-0. The Mids totaled 16 shots while the Crusaders had 11 total shooting opportunities.
Holy Cross wraps up the 2011 season at home against American next. The game will be played on Saturday, Nov. 5 at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium beginning at 3:00 p.m. The squad's four seniors will be honored prior to the first whistle.
