WORCESTER, Mass. – Former Holy Cross soccer player Alejandro Melean has recently been featured in Soccer America Daily and Yanks Abroad for his success in the Bolivian Club Oriente Petrolero, which he joined in January. Melean has helped the squad to a second place standing in the league and has earned four starts.
Melean has played both midfield and defense for the club, who won their last three games including a 3-0 win over Aurora last Wednesday. He has helped them earn 14 points, good for the second place ranking. He has played in six of the teams' seven games thus far.
Melean was a four-year varsity soccer player at Holy Cross. He was named to the first team All-Patriot League as a senior and junior and scored four goals during his junior campaign. After playing at Holy Cross, Melean was unable to get an MLS tryout, so he went to Bolivia and landed a contract in 2010 with La Paz, where he was regular starter and caught the attention of Oriente.
