PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Joshua Cintas (San Diego, Calif.) and freshman Will Bowers (Raleigh, N.C.) connected for their first career goal and assist as the Holy Cross men's soccer team fell to Temple, 4-1, in the Brown Soccer Classic held at Stevenson Field. With the decision, Holy Cross drops to a record of 0-3-1, while the Owls improve to a record of 2-0-0. Cintas broke through for the Crusaders' first goal of the season while Bowers tallied the assist.
Temple started things off with a goal after 17 seconds had gone by in the first half, taking advantage of an empty net situation. The Owls then pulled ahead 2-0 at the 24:07 mark on a header shot and took their two-goal advantage in to the halftime. Holy Cross put together four shots in the first half, including three on-goal, but had all attempts saved by Temple goalkeeper Bobby Rosato. Freshman netminder Michael Thompson (Crowell, Conn.) made one save in the first half of play.
Holy Cross found itself down by three goals six minutes into the second half as Temple took a 3-0 advantage on a shot from on top of the penalty box. At 75:34, Cintas and Bowers put the Crusaders on the board as Bowers hit Cintas with a quick pass that resulted in a score inside the goal box. The Owls tallied one final goal at 82:06, dropping Holy Cross back by the final 4-1 score. The Crusaders finished with seven shots taken, five on-goal.
Thompson registers a record of 0-3-1 on the season after making three saves. Rosato finished the game with four saves and improves his record to 2-0-0 on the season. The Owls totaled 12 shots and were led by Cody Calafiore who scored two goals.
Holy Cross continues competition in the Brown Soccer Classic on Sunday, Sept. 11. The Crusaders will match up against George Mason at 12:00 p.m. on Stevenson Field in Providence, R.I.
