BETHLEHEM, PA. – Lehigh's Neal Melchionni scored twice in the second half as the Holy Cross men's soccer team could not mount a comeback against the Mountain Hawks, falling 2-0 in Patriot League action at the Ulrich Sports Complex. With the loss, the Crusaders accumulate a record of 3-8-2 (0-3-1 PL) while the Mountain Hawks improve to a 5-5-2 (2-1-1 PL) record. Four Crusaders notched shots in the competition, including shots on-goal by sophomore Steven Stefanak (Massapequa, N.Y.) and freshmen Kevin O'Connell (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Monty Sanders (Temecula, Calif.).
Neither team found the back of the net in the first 45 minutes of action, as Lehigh went into the locker room with an 8-3 shots advantage. Sophomore goalie Evan Polanik (Holliston, Mass.) made two saves in the first stanza.
Melchionni then broke through for the first score five minutes into the second half, volleying a ball in at 50:13 from Matt Thaeder. Melchionni connected again at 73:24 to give his team the eventual 2-0 final tally. The second goal came from a through ball by Austin Decker, who tallied the assist. Holy Cross would tally one shot in the second half.
In all, Holy Cross made four shots, three on-goal and had three corner kicks. Lehigh finished with 16 shots, six on-goal and four corner kick attempts. Polanik collected four saves in the contest while Lehigh's net minder, Jonathan Nydell, made three saves in the win. A total of 15 fouls were called as well.
Holy Cross will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 20 against New Hampshire under the lights. The non-conference match-up will be held at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium in Worcester, Mass. starting at 7:00 p.m.
