Rowing Teams Perform Well At Knecht Cup

CAMDEN, N.J. - The Holy Cross men's and women's rowing teams put together several solid performances as a part of a large collegiate field at the two-day Knecht Cup. The weekend's worth of events took place on April 8 and 9 in Camden, N.J.

The men's novice eight crew took the title in the grand final, finishing with a time of 6:25.3 and defeating runner-up Lehigh by just one-hundredth of a second. Earlier in the weekend, the novice eight team qualified by winning their heat in 7:22.6.

Also highlighting the weekend was the men's varsity eight crew's second place finish in a time of 6:04.7. After qualifying with a time of 5:41.5 earlier in the competition, the Crusader team was edged by Temple in the grand final by just over four seconds.

In the men's lightweight eight competition Holy Cross won their qualifying heat with a time of 6:45.0 and went on to take third overall in the finals behind Georgia Tech and St. Joseph's.

For the Crusader women the best finish of the weekend was by the second varsity eight team. Holy Cross finished as the runner-up in the petite final just behind New Hampshire. The Crusader women qualified with time of 7:01.5 in their heat and 7:57.5 in the semifinal before finishing with a time of 7:45.6 in the petite finals.

The women's first varsity eight crew took fourth overall in the third finals with a time of 8:00.4. Their heat time of 7:03.6 and semifinal time of 7:40.2 were clocked earlier in the weekend.

Rounding out the Holy Cross field was the women's novice eight boat. The Crusader women qualified with a 8:13.6 heat time and went on to finished in sixth place in the grand final with a time of 7:48.5.

The Holy Cross rowing teams will be back in action next Saturday, April 15 at Lake Quinsigamond. Hosting Massachusetts and Trinity, the men will begin at 8:00 a.m. The women will take on Mount Holyoke, Smith, Trinity and New Hampshire also beginning at 8:00 a.m.
