WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men's rowing program has named junior Mike Walker (Monson, Mass.) as captain for the 2011-2012 season.
"Mike really impressed me last year with his determination as he worked through a difficult injury, yet missed very little time and still ended up making the varsity eight," said Holy Cross head men's rowing coach Todd Pearson. "I saw him emerge as a person who the other guys really followed and I'm sure that his leadership skills will only continue to grow this year."
Last season, Walker was a member of the second varsity eight that placed first in a race versus Gonzaga and Georgetown at the George Washington Invitational. Walker then rowed with the varsity eight in victories over Bucknell and fellow EARC member Rutgers. He then competed with the varsity eight at the Eastern Sprints. During his rookie season in 2009-2010, he was a member of the freshman eight. His boats finished first with the Crusaders' novice 'A' boat at the Quinsigamond Novice Challenge, won two of three races at the George Washington Invitational, defeating UC San Diego in the first race and George Washington and Gonzaga in the third race, and then won dual-races versus Bucknell and Rutgers.
The Crusaders will start their fall season on Oct. 15 at the Snake Regatta on Lake Quinsigamond.
