Men's Rowing Competes At George Washington Invitational

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Holy Cross men's rowing team competed at the 24th annual George Washington Invitational Regatta on April 9-10, on the Potomac River. The varsity eight won the Sullivan Cup by defeating George Washington and the second varsity eight placed first versus Gonzaga and Georgetown.

On Saturday, the varsity eight rowed versus Oxford and George Washington as the Crusaders (5:59.6) placed second just behind Oxford (5:58.5) and in front of George Washington (6:01.5). The win over George Washington gave the Crusaders the Sullivan Cup which was named after Holy Cross Hall of Famer Tom Sullivan. The Crusaders led the field through the first 500 meters. Oxford then moved out in the middle 1,000. The Crusaders then pushed ahead of George Washington in the sprint and just fell short of Oxford. The result was very impressive as Oxford had won the Oxford Cambridge boat race two weeks ago which is the oldest intercollegiate competition. Then this weekend at the George Washington Invitational they went onto finish second to Navy in the varsity eight final. George Washington also has the most votes of crews not ranked in the most recent USRowing men's varsity eight poll.

The varsity eight (6:00.4) then fell to No. 13 Navy (5:41.9) on Saturday afternoon. And then on Sunday, the Crusaders raced versus No. 15 Georgetown and Gonzaga. Georgetown won with a time of 5:43.0, while the Crusaders placed second with a time of 5:48.2 and Gonzaga finished third with a time of 5:59.0.

On Saturday, the second varsity eight (6:13.9) lost to George Washington (6:12.4) in a very close race, while they then recorded a time of 6:04.6 which was third behind Navy with a time of 5:45.0 and Navy's third varsity eight with a time of 5:52.6. On Sunday, the Crusaders placed first with a time of 5:59.0 as they defeated Gonzaga (6:00.8) and Georgetown (6:11.0).

The freshman eight (6:17.3) finished second behind George Washington (6:10.7) and defeated George Washington's second freshman eight (6:34.8). The Crusaders (6:05.6) finished third behind Navy (5:49.0) and Navy's second freshman eight (5:55.9). On Sunday, the Crusaders (6:10.6), placed third behind Georgetown (6:03.2) and Gonzaga (6:09.1).

The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, April 16, when they take on Georgetown in Princeton, N.J.
