BURLINGTON, Vt. - Freshman Kenny Minor (South Hadley, Mass.) broke a 4-4 tie when he scored the game-winner with 10:05 left in the fourth period as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team defeated Vermont, 5-4, in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Crusaders have won two in a row and improve to 4-6 overall, while the Catamounts fall to 3-8 overall. The Crusaders had five different goal scorers. Holy Cross sophomore goalie Jimmy Harrison (East Williston, N.Y.) was outstanding in net as he made 16 saves.
Minor also had an assist as he led the Crusaders with two points. Senior Tanner Fogarty (McMurray, Pa.), senior Mike Moriarty (Fairfield, Conn.), sophomore Luke Marchand (Concord, Mass.) and freshman Chris Smirti (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) each scored a goal for Holy Cross, while freshman Edison Parzanese (Edgartown, Mass.) had an assist. Vermont had four different goal scorers.
Moriarty gave Holy Cross an early 1-0 lead in the first period when he netted a goal with 10:10 on the clock. The Catamounts would then score two goals in the first period and two in the second to take a 4-1 lead into the half.
The Crusaders would then score the last four goals of the game. Marchand made it a 4-2 game early in the third when he recorded a goal off a pass from Parzanese. Fogarty then cut the deficit in half when he scored with 11:14 left in the third. Smirti then tied the game at 4-4 with less than two minutes to go in the period. Minor assisted on the goal. Minor then scored the game-winner with 10:05 on the clock in the fourth period for the 5-4 victory.
Holy Cross outshot Vermont by a 34-27 margin, while the Crusaders picked up 28 ground balls and the Catamounts had 24.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, April 14, when they host Marist at the Hart Turf Field at 4:00 p.m.
