Schenectady, N.Y. - The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team was unable to close in on Siena and was defeated 8-5, Tuesday afternoon on Siena Field.
Siena jumped off to a two-goal lead in the first six minutes of action with tallies from Ted Moran and Matt Walsh, before the freshman Tim Redmond (Andover, Mass.) cut into the Saints lead at 8:57 into the game with help sophomore Grant Cowherd (Summit, N.J.).
The Saints posted three more back-to-back goals, two to close out the first quarter by Greg Pelatti and Wash and one to open up the second by Christopher Padden.
Cowherd began the Crusaders three-goal rally in the third when he netted his third tally of the season unassisted at 3:03 into the quarter. With a little over five minutes left in the stanza, junior Billy Klotz (Derry, N.H.) put the score at 5-3 Siena, before sophomore Paul LeBlanc (Lexington, Mass.) scored his first of two tallies on the day to bring the Crusaders within one of tying the game. Senior Mike McKee (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) assisted on Klotz' goal, while junior John O'Sullivan (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) helped on LeBlanc's.
A three-goal blast in just over a two minute time span put Siena up 8-4 in the fourth quarter. Philip Ferrara, Walsh and Padden recorded goals in the quarter for the Saints.
With 4:54 remaining in the game LeBlanc netted his second goal of the game for a final score of 8-5, Siena. Senior Pat Hart (Wyckoff, N.J.) assisted on the play.
The Crusaders killed off all six of Siena's extra-man opportunities and was unable to convert their two. Defensively, senior Derek Lemley (Madison, Conn.) picked up a team-high three ground balls.
In the crease junior Matt Fallon (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) made eight saves, as Siena's David Jalette halted seven shots on goal for the win.
Holy Cross (2-7, 0-1 PL) travels to Hamilton, N.Y. on Saturday, April 2, when it takes on Colgate at 3 p.m.
