WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Kenny Minor (South Hadley, Mass.) scored two goals and had two assists for four points, but the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to Dartmouth, 10-9, at the Hart Turf Field on Tuesday evening in non-conference action. With the contest tied at 9-9 with 4:34 remaining in the fourth period, Christopher Root scored the game-winner. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 1-7 overall, while the Big Green improve to 2-5 overall.
Minor also led the team with six ground balls. Junior Chris Smirti (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) and sophomore Colin Flood (Bay Shore, N.Y.) each scored three goals for the Crusaders, while sophomore Conor McKenna (Summit, N.J.) scored one goal and had two assists for three points. Freshman Nick Rabiecki (Maplewood, N.J.) had one assist.
The Big Green were led by Tim Daniels who had three goals and two assists for five points. He also picked up 11 ground balls.
After the Big Green scored the first two goals of the contest, the Crusaders made it a 2-1 score when Flood found the back of the net off a pass by Minor. With the Big Green now up by a score of 3-1, Holy Cross closed out the first period to tie the contest at 3-3 with a goal by Minor and a goal by Flood off an assist by Rabiecki. Smirti gave the Crusaders a 4-3 lead when he scored off a pass from McKenna with 11:37 remaining in the second period. The Big Green then answered with three straight goals to move out a 6-4 advantage, but Flood made it a one-goal contest when he scored the last goal of the second period.
The Crusaders captured the lead with two goals by Smirti as the first one was assisted by Minor and the second one by McKenna. The Big Green responded with two goals, including one by Daniels with just nine seconds remaining in the third period to make the score 8-7. Minor then tied the game at 8-8 with 9:24 remaining in the fourth period, while McKenna gave Holy Cross a 9-8 lead with 8:02 remaining. The Big Green went onto score the last two goals of the game as they tied it with 4:47 remaining and then won it with the goal by Root from a pass by Daniels for the 10-9 final score.
Senior goalie Jimmy Harrison (East Williston, N.Y.) made 12 saves, while Fergus Campbell stopped 13 shots to earn the win. The Big Green outshot Holy Cross, 34-31, while the Crusaders picked up 30 ground balls and Dartmouth picked up 29. The Big Green went 1-4 on extra-man opportunities and Holy Cross went 0-2.
The Crusaders return to action on March 28, when they travel to Lewisburg, Pa., to play Bucknell in a Patriot League contest at 12:00 p.m.
