March 21, 2009
WORCESTER, Mass. - Army's Kevin LoRusso totaled two goals and one assist, to lead the Black Knights to an 8-5 victory over the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team at the Hart Turf Field. The Crusaders were led by junior Kenny Minor (South Hadley, Mass.) and junior Chris Smirti (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.), who scored two goals each. Holy Cross falls to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the Patriot League with the loss, while No. 20 Army improves to 5-3 on the season and 1-1 in the conference.
The Black Knights scored their first goal less than two minutes into the game, and would increase their lead to 5-0 by the 4:15-mark of the second quarter. Smirti's first goal cut the lead to 5-1 at halftime. Army then took a 7-2 lead after the third quarter, and increased its advantage to 8-3 with 11:10 left in regulation. Senior Paddy Dowling (Darien, Conn.) and Minor netted consecutive goals for the Crusaders to make the score 8-5 with 5:11 remaining, but the comeback bid came up short as neither team scored again and the Black Knights held on for the win.
Senior Jimmy Harrison (East Williston, N.Y.) played all 60 minutes in goal for Holy Cross, making 15 saves. Tom Palesky had 18 saves for Army, to earn the victory.
Holy Cross will return to action on Tuesday, March 24, when it plays host to Dartmouth at 6:30 p.m.
