Lewisburg, Pa. - The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team was defeated by Bucknell, 12-5, on Saturday afternoon. Leading the Crusaders was junior Billy Klotz (Derry, N.H.) and sophomore Paul LeBlanc (Lexington, Mass.), who each posted two goals. Chris Cara recorded five goals and three assists to lead the Bison past Holy Cross.
The Bison posted five unanswered goals in the first half, including four in the first quarter, before Crusaders were able respond. Bucknell jumped on the board at 2:59 into the first quarter when Cara netted the Bison's only man-up goal of the day. Bucknell's Brian Gargan, John Salvesen and Cara each tallied goals to give the Bision a 4-0 lead after the first quarter.
Bucknell's Tommy Moore opened up the second quarter with a goal just 24 seconds into the stanza. Holy Cross responded seven seconds later when LeBlanc netted his third goal of the season with help from senior Derek Lemley (Madison, Conn.). The Bison quickly answered the Crusaders' goal when Gargan scored the eventual game-winner at 1:50 into the quarter to give Bucknell a 6-1 lead.
Holy Cross cut the Bison's lead to four when Klotz netted his first goal of the game just 47 seconds later.
After a goal by Bucknell's Patrick Christensen with 7:08 left in the first half, the Crusaders closed the half with two goals. Freshman Toby Banta (Melrose, Mass.) scored his first career-goal with 6:19 left in the half. Klotz squeezed in Holy Cross' fourth marker of the game with 1:06 remaining on the clock.
The Crusaders used a man-up opportunity to score the only goal of the third quarter when LeBlanc found the back of the net at halfway through the stanza.
The Bison posted five unanswered goals in the fourth, including three tallies by Cara and one each by Gargan and Christensen.
Junior Matt Fallon (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) made 12 saves for the Crusaders, while Matt Baran halted 13 shots on goal for the win.
Holy Cross returns to action on Sunday, March 27, when it hosts Navy at 1 p.m. on the Hart Astroturf Field in a Patriot League contest.
