WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to Vermont, 12-5, this afternoon at the Hart Turf Field. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 0-4 on the season, while the Catamounts improve to 3-1. Senior Billy Klotz (Derry, N.H.), junior Paul LeBlanc (Lexington, Mass.), junior Mike Moriarty (Fairfield, Conn.), junior Will Seward (Freeport, N.Y.) and freshman Luke Marchand (Concord, Mass.) each scored a goal for the Crusaders.
Vermont was led by Mike Maher's four goals, while Jamie Kirk and Andrew Holden each scored two goals.
Vermont took an early 1-0 with 12:37 on the clock in the first period when Maher scored his first goal of the game, but Marchand tied the game at 1-1 when he scored a goal with 3:08 left. The Catamounts then scored a late goal to take a 2-1 lead into the second period.
Each team scored three times in the second period including Holy Cross goals from Moriarty, Klotz and LeBlanc as Vermont took a 5-4 lead into the half.
Seward scored Holy Cross' lone goal of the second half when he scored with 9:34 left in the third period as the Crusaders trailed, 6-5. But that is as close as Holy Cross would get as Vermont scored six straight goals to end the game with the 12-5 victory.
Holy Cross senior goalie Matt Fallon (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) made 15 saves, while Vermont's Justin Lubas stopped seven shots to earn the win. The Crusaders went 0-3 on extra-man opportunities and the Catamounts went 1-2. Each team had 28 ground balls.
The Crusaders will return to action on Tuesday, March 14, when they host Harvard at the Hart Turf Field at 4:00 p.m.
