WORCESTER, Mass.- The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to Fairfield, 19-4, in the season opener for both teams this afternoon at the Hart Turf Field. Senior Billy Klotz (Derry, N.H.), junior Paul LeBlanc (Lexington, Mass.), sophomore Toby Banta (Melrose, Mass.) and sophomore James Malone (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) each scored goals for Holy Cross. The Crusaders will return to action on Saturday, March 4, when they hit the road to take on the Hartford Hawks at Al-Marzook Field. The game is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
The Stags scored the first 11 goals of the game before Malone netted Holy Cross' first goal of the game with 1:20 left in the second period. After Fairfield took a 13-1 lead in the third period, Banta's goal with 3:38 left in the period made the score 13-2. The Stags then went onto score six straight goals to take a 19-2 lead. LeBlanc and Klotz added fourth period goals for the 19-4 final score.
Fairfield's Greg Downing scored five goals and Travis Nelson added three goals to lead the Stags, while Brian Stanton and Kevin Wolff each added two goals.
Holy Cross senior goalie Matt Fallon (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) made seven saves as he played into second period. Freshman Jimmy Harrison (East Williston, N.Y.) then came in and stopped 11 shots, while junior David Vafek (Michalovce, Slovakia) made a save as he played the last 11:30 of the game. Fairfield's Mike Kruger made four saves and Tim Gazzini stopped two shots.
