Fairfield, Conn. - Despite a four goal rally in the third quarter Holy Cross was unable to catch up to Fairfield as it was defeated 12-4, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game.
The Stags posted nine unanswered goals and held Holy Cross scoreless until late in the third quarter when junior John O'Sullivan (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) netted the Crusaders first goal of the game with 5:25 left in the stanza. Freshman Toby Banta (Melrose, Mass.) assisted on the play. Fairfield's Mike Brocklet netted a hat trick as Josh Thornton, Charles Keinath, Tom Werney, Matt Castele, Chris manley and Dan Boudreau each scored a goal in Fairfield's nine goal run.
After O'Sullivan's tally Fairfield answered with a goal 26 seconds later when Matt Scanlon registered the Stags 10th marker of the game to put he score at 10-1.
Junior Billy Klotz (Derry, N.H.) posted back-to-back goals less than a minute apart dropping Fairfield's lead, 10-3. Sophomore Jason Tartagni (New Haven, Conn.) assisted on Klotz's first goal as sophomore Paul LeBlanc (Lexington, Mass.) helped on the second.
Leblanc recorded his first goal of the season with help from Banta with 2:09 remaining in the third.
The score would remain stuck at 10-4 for 14 minutes until Fairfield's Travis Nelson netted a goal with 3:44 left in the fourth. With a man-up advantage, Werney posted the Stags' final tally of the game with 2:49 left in the game.
Junior Matt Fallon (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) made 14 saves for the Crusaders, as Michael Kruger halted 11 shots on goal for the win.
Holy Cross travels to Maryland to take on Butler at the Boy's Latin School in Baltimore on Sunday, March 6 at noon.
