Worcester, Mass. - Sophomore Grant Cowherd (Summit, N.J.) led Holy Cross with two goals as the Crusaders edged out Providence, 5-4, Wednesday evening in the Crusaders' season-opener.
The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead after the first quarter when Cowherd netted his first-goal of the season just 1:26 into the quarter.
Providence responded with two goals in the second to take a 2-1 lead. Senior John Hollister tied the game just 55 seconds into the second with help from junior Tom Kelly. Senior Dan Giuntini put the Friars ahead by one when he posted his third goal of the season.
Holy Cross answered with two goals late in the second quarter to take a 3-2 lead heading into halftime. Junior Billy Klotz (Derry, N.H.) evened the score at 2-2 at 13:06 in the quarter. Senior Mike McKee (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) put the Crusaders ahead when he posted a goal with 3.3 seconds remaining in the first half.
The Friars opened the second half with a goal by Giuntini just 1:54 into the stanza to tie the game at three-all.
Cowherd posted his second goal of the game to give the Crusaders their final lead of the game at 5:39 in the third quarter. Junior John O'Sullivan (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) gave Holy Cross a 5-3 lead when he netted the eventual game-winner at 6:48 in the third.
Providence came within one of tying the Crusaders when sophomore Henry Pynchon found the back of the net with 10:31 remaining in the game.
Junior Matt Fallon (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) made 13 saves for the win, while sophomore Peter Littell made 14 saves for the Friars.
Holy Cross next takes Fairfield on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 1 p.m. The Crusaders return home on Saturday, March 12 when they host Hartford at 3 p.m.
