WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Sophomore goalie Michael Ortlieb (Newport Beach, Calif.) made 13 saves and junior captain Terry McKenna (Summit, N.J.) scored three goals as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team defeated Hartford, 13-8, on Tuesday night at Al-Marzook Field in non-conference action. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 2-7 overall, while the Hawks fall to 4-5 overall.
After Kevin O'Shea gave the Hawks an early 1-0 lead, junior Frank Gaul (Glen Rock, N.J.) scored his first collegiate goal to tie the contest at 1-1 with 10:52 left in the first quarter. Just 46 seconds later, Andrew Cacchio found the back of the net as the Hawks took a 2-1 advantage, but with 8:21 remaining, junior Jamie Ward (Glen Rock, N.J.) scored the equalizer to make it a 2-2 game. Following Cacchio's second goal of the game, the Crusaders closed out the first quarter by netting two straight goals to take a 4-3 lead. Sophomore Thomas Shannon (Andover, Mass.) scored off a pass from junior Clay Haarmann (Mendham, N.J.) and sophomore Sean Wilkinson (Ridgefield, Conn.) found the back of the net. Cacchio scored a goal to post a hat-trick to tie the game at 4-4 with 10:42 left in the second quarter. Freshman Ben Williams (Prior Lake, Minn.) then won the ensuing faceoff and sprinted down the field and then sent a pass to Haarmann who blasted a shot to the upper right corner of the net just six seconds after the Hawks had tied the game. After Brad Hutton tied the contest at 5-5 for the Hawks, Haarmann and Williams each scored for the Crusaders. O'Shea scored the last goal of the second quarter for the Hawks as the Crusaders took a 7-6 lead to the half.
The Crusaders moved out to a 9-6 lead as McKenna and freshman Kevin Lux (Manlius, N.Y.) each netted a goal in the third quarter. Adam Yee cut the Crusaders' lead to two goals with 14:53 left in the fourth quarter. The Crusaders then answered with four straight goals to increase their lead to 13-7. McKenna scored twice during this stretch to post his fifth hat-trick of the season and the eighth of his career, while Ward and Wilkinson each netted a goal. With just 14 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Hutton found the back of the net for the 13-8 final score. This is the Crusaders' third straight victory versus the Hawks.
Ortlieb posted a .619 save percentage. Frank Piechota made five saves for the Hawks. The Hawks outshot the Crusaders, 40-37, while each team picked up 32 ground balls. The Hawks won 15 of 25 faceoffs, while each team went 0-2 on extra-man opportunities.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, March 29, when they play at Patriot League opponent Lehigh at 2:00 p.m.
