WORCESTER, Mass. – With the game tied at 6-6 entering the fourth quarter, the Stags then outscored the Crusaders 5-3 as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team fell to No. 19 Fairfield, 11-9, on Saturday afternoon at Holy Cross Field in non-conference action. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 1-7 overall, while the Stags improve to 6-2 overall.
The Crusaders were led by junior Clay Haarmann (Mendham, N.J.) who posted four points with three goals and one assist, while junior captain Terry McKenna (Summit, N.J.) tallied three goals. Freshman Ben Williams (Prior Lake, Minn.) was outstanding as he picked up 11 ground balls and won 17 of 23 faceoffs. The Stags were led by Tristan Sperry who tallied two goals and three assists for five points.
After Colin McLinden gave the Stags an early 1-0 lead, sophomore Thomas Shannon (Andover, Mass.) found the back of the net off a pass from Haarmann to tie the contest at 1-1 with 6:24 left in the first quarter. Sperry then scored for Fairfield with 5:35 left, but with just eight seconds remaining Haarmann netted a goal to tie the game at 2-2 going to the second quarter. The Crusaders moved out to a 4-2 advantage as Haarmann and McKenna each posted a goal. Sophomore Pat Coan (Towson, Md.) tallied an assist on McKenna's goal. With 1:20 left in the second quarter, Drew Federico found the back of the net for Fairfield to cut the Crusaders' lead to 4-3 going to the half.
The Stags gained the lead by scoring the first two goals of the second half, but the Crusaders answered with two goals by sophomore Sean Wilkinson (Ridgefield, Conn.) to take a 6-5 advantage with 2:06 left in the third quarter. Freshman Kevin Lux (Manlius, N.Y.) posted an assist on both goals. After Fairfield scored three straight goals to move out to a 8-6 lead with 10:02 remaining in the fourth quarter, Haarmann tallied his third goal of the contest for his first hat-trick of the season and the sixth of his career. The Stags extended their lead to 10-7 with two goals by Eric Warden, but McKenna then netted two goals to make it a one-goal game at 10-9 with 3:17 remaining. McKenna has seven hat-tricks for his career and four this season. With 1:33 left, T.J. Neubauer scored an insurance goal for the Stags to make it a 11-9 game. Williams then won the ensuing faceoff, but a shot by McKenna was saved by Fairfield goalie Jack Murphy as the stags would keep the ball for the 11-9 final score.
Sophomore goalie Michael Ortlieb (Newport Beach, Calif.) made seven saves, while Murphy posted eight to earn the win. Holy Cross outshot Fairfield, 39-27, while the Stags picked up 31 ground balls and the Crusaders posted 26. The Stags went 1-1 on extra-man opportunities and the Crusaders went 0-5.
The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, March 25, when they play at Hartford at 7:00 p.m.
